The legend about Vodnjan
According to legend, long ago there were several villages in this area, always in fear of wars and plunder, rendering impossible the daily life of its inhabitants.
In order to resist these perils, representatives of seven villas gathered and decided that they would all live at the same site.
4000 years old the first human settlements
This was decided in hope of reinforcing their common defense. They chose the site of St. Lawrence at the edge of present-day Vodnjan municipality.
Even nowadays, the inhabitants of Vodnjan refer to the ruins of the former Church of St. Lawrence as ˝groumaso de la sorte˝ or ˝remains where the stones were thrown“, i.e. where the decision was made.
